Introduction to Sustainable Tourism
By Shelley Lockhart
June 22, 2020
I’d like to introduce myself. My name is Shelley Lockhart, and I am a proud employee of INNHotels. I work out of the Best Western Inn and Suites, in Stony Plain, Alberta. During my time at this location, I have had the opportunity to connect with Lisa Levasseur over our mutual passion for sustainable living. We had started a conversation about how to work towards having the companies' ten locations certified as sustainable tourist destinations. Then COVID hit the fan!!! As everything started to slow down, and with the uncertainty of the times, I was unsure if this project would be considered a priority, and I am extremely pleased to announce that INNHotels IS very committed to a sustainable future for our guests and families. In fact it is our INNVision. In order to move forward with this vision, we have partnered with Greenstep Solutions Inc. and thru their Sustainable Tourism2030 initiative, they will provide us with guidance and training to create a sustainability strategy, which will help us measure and improve our practices at each location, and reduce our carbon footprint. They also provide funding opportunities, once we are certified , to reach new levels of sustainable tourism. Lisa had already started this process at her Terracana Ranch location several years ago (the picture I have included is the view from my cabin when I had the pleasure to visit the Ranch last fall) She will be my mentor, as we assemble a team to work on a project of this magnitude. I will definitely be learning a lot and I am looking forward to the challenge, and the rewards. I am excited to take my passion for the environment and join the "sustainable tourism movement", which is seeing a growing number of travelers that find this a priority in tourist destinations. This will put the company on a whole new level in the global industry by providing these travelers with choices they can feel good about.
The first step, which we are working on , is an assessment of all the properties. This will gauge what level each location is currently operating at and will allow us to create an action plan for each location. From the action plan, we work on ways to improve our business practices. This can include things such as installing energy efficient windows, or sourcing local suppliers of food and products. It is a step by step process and I look forward to posting about our progress as we go. Id also like to take this opportunity to open up the discussion of sustainable living and hear what others have to say. Thru conversations such as these, we can work together and educate ourselves on how to live a little more gentle on our precious planet.
So there you have it kids, thanks for reading my blog. Please stay tuned for updates on this project and other "green" topics we will be discussing as we move forward. And a special thanks to INNHotels for their commitment and vision on this subject. It is a honor to work for a company with such integrity.
Sincerely, Shelley Lockhart
