Stony Plain, a charming town located just west of Edmonton, Alberta, is home to a vibrant art scene that
is reflected in its many murals. These colorful works of art are a visual celebration of the town's history,
culture, and natural surroundings.
Stony Plain's murals are the result of a community-driven initiative that began in 1990. The Stony Plain
Mural Project was established with the goal of transforming the town's blank walls into canvases for
artistic expression. Over the years, the project has grown to include over 30 murals, each with its own
unique story to tell.
One of the most iconic murals in Stony Plain is the "Homesteader" mural, located on the side of the
Stony Plain Public Library. This mural depicts a pioneer family and their homestead, complete with
horses, wagons, and a farmhouse. The mural serves as a reminder of Stony Plain's agricultural roots and
the hard work and perseverance of its early settlers.
Another notable mural in town is the "Harvest Time" mural, located on the side of the Parkland Building
on 50th Avenue. This mural features a colorful scene of farmers harvesting their crops, with the Stony
Plain water tower looming in the background. The mural captures the beauty of the town's natural
surroundings and the importance of agriculture to the local economy.
In addition to these historical murals, Stony Plain also features several murals that celebrate the town's
artistic community. One such mural is the "Artist's Alley" mural, located in a pedestrian alleyway off Main
Street. This mural features colorful splashes of paint and abstract designs, serving as a tribute to the
town's many talented artists.
Stony Plain's murals are not only beautiful works of art, but they also serve an important purpose in
bringing the community together. The murals are a source of pride for residents and a draw for tourists,
who come from all over to admire the town's unique artistic expression.
If you're planning a trip to Stony Plain, be sure to take some time to explore the town's many murals. You
can pick up a mural tour brochure at the Stony Plain Visitor Information Centre, located on Main Street.
The brochure includes a map and information about each mural, allowing you to take a self-guided tour
at your own pace.
Overall, Stony Plain's murals are a testament to the town's creative spirit and community pride. Whether
you're a history buff, an art lover, or simply looking for a unique experience, the murals of Stony Plain are
definitely worth a visit.
